It was on our wish list and lots of people have been looking forward to it for a long time: the match between two ‘enfants terribles’ of early music: Graindelavoix sings Gesualdo!
The project has taken on superhuman dimensions: Graindelavoix has risen to the challenge of performing the entire Tenebrae Responsoria cycle in a single marathon concert, a vocal tour de force that runs the full gamut of the emotional dynamics of Holy Week.
Gesualdo published the Responsoria, along with one psalm and one hymn, as a single dramatic work in Naples in 1611. Besides doing justice to the madrigalesque aspects of the cycle, Graindelavoix aims to infuse it with all the intensity of the Mediterranean Settimana Santa.
Björn Schmelzer will give a free introduction at 16:00 in kunstencentrum nona with background information about this marathon project and Graindelavoix in general. Please reserve your seat at mechelen@festival.be.
