Kassia is sure to become a favourite with everyone who attends this concert. This 9th century Byzantine composer is more than worth discovering. About fifty of her hymns and a scattering of her other works have been handed down to us. They bear witness to Kassia as one of the central figures in the cultural and spiritual life along the Bosporus in that era.

Gerlinde Sämann will give a free introduction to the concert at 19:00 in CC Mechelen. The singer Gerlinde Sämann is in demand all over the world. She sings the stars from the sky as if it were no effort at all. She is also blind. She will talk about how she works with conductors, how she studies scores and all the practical worries that a richly-filled life as a concert performer brings.
