Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme, a famous 16th century hymn, is the starting point for a partita for solo baroque violin by Wouter Dekoninck. The four-part composition (prelude, courante, lullaby and gigue) is dedicated to Madoka Nakamaru. Incidentally, the lullaby (perfect for the festival theme, Sweet Dreams) is a reference to the TV programme Tik Tak that once entranced countless toddlers.
Kurt De Boodt’s magnificent poetry collection mal dood lam also contains many unexpected references. At the back of the book, the poet mentions more than a hundred names of people and things who sung along in the mal dood lam choir, from Charles Darwin and The Beatles to the Muppet Show and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The little lamb lies down, but this is certainly not a lullaby.
