De Monte forgotten

Graindelavoix

Graindelavoix has received international acclaim for its interpretations of music by composers including Johannes Ockeghem and Carlo Gesualdo. Especially for Lunalia, the ensemble’s artistic leader, Björn Schmelzer, has got his teeth into the music of Philippus de Monte. This search has been given the apt title Forgetting De Monte. Or: the trials, tribulations and failures of the last of the polyphonists. French chansons, seven-part madrigals or the Kyrie from the Missa ad te levaviSchmelzer and his singers lift the veil of oblivion that surrounds De Monte. There are also two madrigals on the programme from the fourteenth madrigal book for five voices, dating from 1590. This book has only been preserved in its entirety in Mechelen. A rediscovery in the true sense of the word.

The concert film with introduction by Björn Schmelzer can be viewed on this page at 8pm on Friday evening 20/08 and Saturday evening 21/08.
