It’s common knowledge that the viol player Fahmi Alqhai and flamenco singer Alba Carmona set each other alight. One works with oral traditions, the other with ancient manuscripts. That means the cantes flamencos that once resounded all the way from Andalusia to South American or marionas that also crossed the Atlantic and found their way into the first Spanish guitar books back in the 17th century. Or Monteverdi’s ostinato songs with the same chord progressions as siguiriyas. The fire of flamenco continues to burn today from many torches, and in the passionate steps and gestures of its dancers.
