Heleen Van Haegenborgh’s instrument is the piano, and in her recent recording project High Carbon, she returns to her roots as a pianist after several years of composing for other instruments. In a profoundly personal narrative, she weaves the piano, electronics and her own sound techniques into a subtle, many-layered world of sound. At times, the electronics and piano merge into a single, flowing voice; at other moments they crackle and smoulder beneath the surface. This is the first half of a two-part production, the second of which is performed by Christian Wallumrød’s ensemble.
His music escapes effortlessly from fixed categories, moving along the borders of jazz, chamber music, minimalism and contemporary classical music. He opts resolutely for subtlety and stillness. His concerts are bathed in an intimate, almost spiritual atmosphere where fragile timbres create an unexpected, blazing universe.
