Goeyvaerts reflected - vernissage

Pop-up exhibition

One hundred years after his birth and thirty years after his sudden death, the biography of the composer Karel Goeyvaerts (1923-1993) still reads like a novel. Although his name doesn’t always ring a bell outside Belgium, it was Karel Goeyvaerts who quietly conquered the now legendary Ferienkurse für neue Musik in Darmstadt in the summer of 1951 with the first pages of entirely serial music. In doing so, he left an indelible mark on the post-war avant-garde, but seven years later, he experienced the World Exhibition in Brussels as an agent for the airline Sabena. He briefly gave up composing around that time, only to pick up his musical career again almost as easily as he had dropped it. In the last decade of his life, his opera Aquarius once again heralded a new age. So there are plenty of reasons for MATRIX to present the pop-up exhibition Goeyvaerts gespiegeld in Mechelen during this jubilee year.

In collaboration with Cultuurcentrum Mechelen and MATRIX [Centre for New Music].
The exhibition runs until 07.05 and can be visited daily from 1 p.m.
