Inner Cities by the New York composer and pianist Alvin Curran is described as a desert landscape that reveals itself in all its beauty, rawness and ruthlessness. Some parts are brutal without compromise, balancing on the brink of losing control, heading for total exhaustion. Other sections are delicate, like a gently unfurling landscape of sound. They are studies in liberation and restraint, a search in the darkness for the inner flame from which all artistic inspiration springs.
