Beethoven & Film

For the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the Argentinean-German composer and director Mauricio Kagel created ‘Ludwig van’, a film that takes a critical, provocative and ironic look at how Beethoven’s music is used (and misused), with the help of none other than Joseph Beuys. We accompany the composer to Bonn in the late 1960s, where Ludwig Van stops by at a record store and even joins a group of tourists on a guided tour of the Beethoven-Haus where he himself was born and raised.
The soundtrack is no less provocative: Kagel uses motifs and snippets from Beethoven’s work to create an assembly that sounds ‘the way Beethoven heard his music when he was nearly deaf’.
