Ludwig van Beethoven’s first string quartet is described as the gateway to the unique and enchanting world of his quartets. He composed his way into the history books with this work in four movements, alongside Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is part of a series brought together as Opus 18, dedicated to Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz. Ignaz Schuppanzigh, the famous violinist who was the first to perform many of Beethoven’s works, considered this quartet in F major, written in 1799, to be the best in the series.
