The carillon dreams
he carillon is inextricably linked to Mechelen, and it is also one of the places where the Mechelen wing of the Festival of Flanders began in 1969 (under the name Lunalia since 2018). In fact, the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen has more than 100 students this year. The carillon will also have a special part to play in this year’s Lunalia opening concert. To open the festival in style, the carillons of the Hof van Busleyden (with city carillonist Eddy Mariën) and the Church of Our Lady over the Dyle (with the Norwegian carillonist Laura-Marie Rueslåtten) will ring out at the beginning of Lunalia Lift Off.

The best place to hear the carillon of the Hof van Busleyden is in the large courtyard garden, where the sound carries as far as Sint-Janstraat.
The best place to hear the carillon of the Church of Our Lady over the Dyle is from one of the benches on the church square, or in Onze-Lieve-Vrouwstraat.
