At a concert of the popular music written down by Bishop Martínez Compañón, it’s difficult to sit still. He was born in Spain and travelled in Peru in the late 18th century, making accurate notations of the music he heard on the road. We hear tonadas – songs accompanied by the harp, violin and guitar – and dance music such as bailes en cachuas. Some of the lyrics are declarations of love, others are straightforwardly sensual, while others still are religious in nature or recall historical events. Slavery or the imprisonment of Atahualpa are subjects that cut to the bone. What they all have in common, however, is an irrepressible lust for life. We promise all these rousing rhythms will have you warmed up in no time!
