The Secret Diary of Nora Plain tells the intimate story of Nora Plain who tries to lead a life of her own in a world that tries to intrude more and more – right into her deepest thoughts and feelings. It is a personal and penetrating account of the relationships between society, privacy, paranoia and safety.
This song cycle is surrounded by the sultry sounds of a string quartet and a drummer’s unpredictable rhythms. The texts are by the Dutch singer-songwriter Lucky Fonz III, with music by Morris Kliphuis. The ensemble is inspired by Schubert’s song cycles and The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello & the Brodsky Quartet as well as Björk, Ligeti and the punk rock group Fugazi. In a hybrid musical language, they breathe new life into this form in a pioneering project with contemporary texts and music.
